Guangzhou: India's hopes of a historic medal tally at the BWF World Championships took a beating
on Friday with Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap both exiting at the quarter-final stage. Saina
was beaten 23-21, 21-9 by South Korean Yeon Ju Bae, who has been seeded 13th in the event, while
Kashyap fell to Du Pengyu of China 21-16, 22-20, 21-15. It was the fourth time in a row Saina
has bowed out of the World Championships at the quarter-final stage, while Kashyap's heart-
breaking defeat came after he had a match point in the second game.
Saina made a promising start to her quest for a final-four place, at one stage leading 17-11
over the 16th-ranked Bae with a series of smash winners. However, here on she started to slip
and lost the first game. In the second she again took the lead but from 4-2 it all went downhill
as Bae lifted herself strongly in the second game, scoring six winners at the net as compared to
Saina's single.
While Bae showed almost no nerves in her shuttle play, Saina appeared visibly troubled with her
smashes lacking power and the number of unforced errors adding to her woes.
Saina's defeat came a day after she fell to No. 4 in the Badminton World Federation rankings
released on Thursday. Saina had sealed her place in the quarter-finals by beating 15th seed Thai
Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 18-21, 21-16, 21-14 in 52 minutes.
Kashyap, having dispatched Hong Kong's Yun Hu 21-13, 21-16 in 37 minutes on Thursday, came up
against Pengyu, the current World No.3 and third seeded in the competition. The first game began
neck and neck but Kashyap scored three straight points to make it 18-14 and then managed to win
it 21-16.
In the second, Pengyu burst to life with a 7-1 lead early on but Kashyap kept himself in the
hunt by reducing the lead to 12-16, followed by four straight point to tie the game 16-16. That
became 20-20 before Dengyu took the match into a third game. Kashyap appeared to be in control
with a 7-4 lead in the decider, but gave it up as he trailed 13-17 and eventually crashed out to
the Chinese.
