Indian News-No Division of West Bengal: Mamata-Newsmasthi.com

KOLKATA: With GJM (Gorkha Janmukti Morcha) renewing the demand for Gorkhaland in Darjeeling following UPA unanimously endorsing creation of a separate Telangana state, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday ruled out division of West Bengal and blamed the Congress for the agitation in the hills.

"Darjeeling is part and parcel of West Bengal. There is no question of division of West Bengal. We are united, we will be united and we will be together," Banerjee told a press conference here.

Apparently referring to the recent visit by a six-member GJM team headed by its general secretary Roshan Giri to Delhi with the Gorkhaland demand, Banerjee alleged "I am sorry to say ... I will write to Prime Minister whether it was a right step or not that some central ministers invited three or four Morcha leaders to Delhi some days back.

"A meeting was also held with them. They have reported back that some Central leaders have advised them to revive their movement in Darjeeling hills. There was also an assurance of according autonomy to them," Banerjee said.

"A union territory without taking consent of the state? It is funny. Is it a lollipop in a child's hand?"

Stating that peace had been prevailing in Darjeeling and would continue, she said "I request the Centre that has responsibility to see that peace is not disturbed in Darjeeling."

AP Political News-Byreddy Rajasekhara Reddy to Start New Party-Newsmasthi.com

Rayalaseema Parirakshana Samithi president Byreddy Rajashekhar Reddy has announced that he is going to launch a political party in the next month. He told the media that he wrote letters to all the AICC members requesting not to divide Rayalaseema to form Rayala Telangana. In his letter to Congress he warned that if it divides the region then it has to face dire consequences.

He sharply criticized his Seema leaders Chandrababu, CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, Jagan Mohan Reddy, TG Venkatesh and others for failing to raise voice against Congress proposal of forming Rayala Telangana. He condemns Vijayamma statement of “It makes no difference for her party even if Congress creates Rayala Telangana state.”

He said in such case, YSRCP should put her photo in TRS office and Jagan should launch a new political party ‘Jaganadhra party’ to suit their ambitions. He said if the Congress plans to split Rayalaseema, then he will start agitation afresh to avert such ideas.

Byreddy is protesting division of the state, but if division is inevitable he demands to make it three separate states as Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana and not as Andhra and Telangana or Rayala Telangana and Andhra states.

AP Political News-History of TelanganaNewsmasthi.com

A dying feudalism is only a part of the problem. After all, feudalism has been a national problem. But in Telangana, it received hammer blows at the hands of the Socialist and Communist struggles of the forties. It received a fillip at the hands of Andhra rulers in the fifties and sixties who pushed the Hyderabad Tenancy Act under the carpet. But now it is on its last legs slowly getting converted into elitist professions and an incipient capitalism. Caste too is a part of the problem, though the Arya Samaj Movement of the thirties and forties tried to resolve it in its own manner. The weakness of the movement was that it was largely an urban movement, failing to effectively penetrate the countryside. Communalism too is a part of the problem, albeit a small part, being basically an urban phenomenon bound up with history and race memory. The basic problem of the Deccan, of which Telangana is a part, was and is total denial of participation to local people in the affairs of the state. It was not always so. Tribal kingdoms and the Kakatiyas Empire were, to the extent possible then, participatory systems, based on the concept of the welfare of people.
The attack on the participatory system came during Bahmani rule which was basically a military and imperial system. Such a system which depended on foreign mercenaries for its survival had to be exploitative, cruel and anti-local. It depended on foreign recruits even though local soldiers were available. It had to because its aim was not the welfare of people but a luxurious style of life for the foreign ruling class. Locals, both Muslims and Hindus, revolted against this, resulting first in the massacre of foreigners, Iranians and Turks, followed by decimation of local soldiers and subjugation of the countryside. The valiant Yadava queen of Golkonda fought against the Bahamanis with a small force against overwhelming odds and died a martyr. The revolt of the locals in Bidar and the Golkonda battle can be described as the first stirrings for self-rule in the Deccan. Most Qutub Shahis, on the other hand, tried to reconcile their political interests with the well-being of people. The use of the Telangana language as a vehicle both in cultural and administrative matters brought about a sense of participation in the local population. The martyrdom of Akkanna and Madanna at the hands of traitors, the resistance of Abdul Razzak Laari and the arrest and detention of Abul Hasan Tanasha, the last Qutub Shahi king, by Aurangazeb, reversed the process. The system relapsed into imperialism and the militant mentality and people into sullen silence.
The Asafjahis were aliens and their support base was mainly the north Indian gentry. They brought thousands of north-Indians to man the administration. Though Mahbub Ali Pasha, the Sixth Nizam, was a folk king, the process continued till it was challenged during the reign of the Seventh Nizam, by local Muslims who launched what is described as the Mulki (local) movement. The movement was successful and the Nizam created Mulki rules to protect local interests. During the same period Gonds of Adilabad revolted against oppressive rule. The Nizam invited Hammendorf, a reputed German anthropologist, to report on the state of affairs in tribal areas and suggest reforms. His proposals were accepted and martyrdom of Bhim did not go in vain.
Though it was laudatory that Urdu, an Indian language, was used as the language of administration and education, other language like Telugu, Marathi and Kannada also should have been used. It did not happen. The Arya Samajis too taught Hindi in their night schools, avoiding local languages. Local people, both Hindus and Muslims, were ridiculed for not knowing proper Urdu which of course meant Urdu of Lucknow and Delhi and not the Dakhani language. The Dakhani language, a beautiful product of interaction between Iranian settlers and the people of the Deccan speaking Telugu, Marathi and Kannada was totally ignored.

AP Political News-Telangana Will Be 29th State-Newsmasthi.com

New Delhi: Telangana is all set to be the 29th state of India. The Congress Working Committee on Tuesday gave the green signal for the formation of a separate state in a crucial meet that was held in the national capital.

Earlier, the UPA allies had also endorsed the formation of a separate state.

Addressing the media, senior Congress leaders, Ajay Maken and Digvijay Singh formally announced the decision that was taken at the CWC meet.

"Centre will be asked to take steps for the creation of Telangana," Ajay Maken said. He added that Hyderabad would be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for ten years.

Maken further said, "The decision taken today was after wide deliberations. Concerns of all parties will be addressed," adding, "The CWC appeals to all Congressmen to give the support so that the formation of Telangana can be carried out in letter and spirit.

Earlier after the UPA meet held today, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh had told the media, "A unanimous decision has been taken on the formation of Telangana in the UPA coordination committee meet."

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had also held talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today.

Sonia met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, AICC general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh, former in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad and Sonia’s political secretary Ahmad Patel after her meeting with the PM.

The decision for the formation of a separate state was taken despite strong opposition from party leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions to the formation of Telangana; they have warned the party of the problems that could follow the division.

In a last minute attempt to convince the party high command against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister MM Pallam Raju met Sonia Gandhi. Talking to reporters later, Raju said, “We have expressed our concern, requested party high command to take a responsible decision.”

AP Political News-Telangana issue Update At Delhi -Newsmasthi.com

The political scene has again shifted to New Delhi with Seemandhra Congress leaders making a beeline for the capital in a bid to convince the high command against taking any decision in favour of bifurcation of the State.
The Congress Core Committee is scheduled to meet on Friday when it is expected to finalise the date for the Congress Working Committee meeting, most likely before the monsoon session of Parliament begins on August 5, to discuss Telangana.
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Deputy CM C. Damodar Rajanarsimha and APCC president Botcha Satyanarayana have been asked to be available in Delhi on Friday for giving clarifications. Mr. Satyanarayana flew on Thursday night while Mr. Reddy will leave on Friday evening.
Seemandhra Ministers and others from the region plan to meet AICC leaders to make a forceful plea against division of the State on the ground that it would cause loss to the people and the party. In fact, the party would have to take the blame for the long-term consequences.
Ministers T. G. Venkatesh and Erasu Pratap Reddy reiterated their resolve to continue their struggle till the last against division of the State on the basis of emotions. But, they did not clarify their position on submitting resignations en masse if the party took a decision in favour of separate Telangana.

AP Political News-Why did Konda & Co gives ultimatum to YSR party ?-Newsmasthi.com

In a major setback to the YSR Congress, senior leaders from Telangana snapped ties with it after failing to get convincing answer from the honorary president Y. S. Vijayamma on the resignations tendered by 16 MLAs.
Senior leaders from the region, Konda Surekha, Konda Muralidhar Rao, K.K. Mahender Reddy, Jitta Balakrishna Reddy, Ravindra Naik, Kommuri Pratap Reddy and Raj Thakur Singh held second round of consultations with Ms. Vijayamma at the Lotus Pond residence here on Saturday. The talks did not yield any positive result as the leadership could not satisfactorily answer the apprehensions raised by the seniors. The YSR Congress leadership declined to make any public statement reiterating the same stand it has spelt out during plenary in Idupulapaya. Telangana YSR Congress leaders questioned why they were not taken into confidence if the MLAs had decided to resign citing the indifferent attitude of the Congress on the statehood issue. Sources said the YSR Congress leadership tried to convince the Telangana leaders that their Seemandhra counterparts too have some problems due to which, they may have tendered resignations. Failing to get positive reply, the Telangana Congress leaders led by Ms Surekha said that they could not get satisfactory answers on whether the resignations were personal or party stand. “We will decide the future course of action shortly,” she said adding that the Telangana YSR Congress leaders did not want to be an obstacle when the statehood issue was being settled.

India Political News-Mulayam Singh Comments Against Telangana-Newsmasthi.com

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh will play truant to the Telangana process, if at all the Congress is seriously mulling the idea of carving a separate Telangana. At a late Sunday Iftar party in Bangalore with a select gathering, including politicians, celebrities and religious leaders, his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party patriarch said that the UPA would go on dividing the country into different pieces, if it was let separate Telangana.
He said that his party was opposed to the creation of a separate Telangana. Many such demands for smaller states would mushroom. Smaller States would not augur well for the development of the country and a separate Telangana could also be dogged by the same problems as that of the ones confronted by the recently-created States of Chattisgarh, Uttara Khand and Jharkhand.
To a query what his party’s stand if a Bill on Telangana was moved in the Parliament, Mulayam Singh Yadav asserted that his party would oppose it.

Indian News-Amartya Sen - Will Return Bharat Ratna if Vajpayee Asks-Newsmasthi.com

On the Bharat Ratna controversy, he told another channel: “Mr Chandan Mitra may not know that the Bharat Ratna was given to me by the BJP-led government and was handed to me by Atal Behari Vajpayee. If Mr Vajpayee wants me to return it, I will certainly return it.”
related story
His remark came a day after BJP MP Chandan Mitra tweeted that the next NDA government should strip Sen of the honour for saying he didn’t want Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to be the next PM.

Meanwhile, Jagdish Bhagwati — another noted economist who has long criticised Sen’s work and praised Gujarat’s growth in recent times — also jumped into the fray. “I am not going to vote for Modi. I have no particular affection for him. But I have no particular affection for Rahul Gandhi also,” he said in a TV interview.

He added that Sen, who many say backs Congress’ welfare-based poverty-reduction model, has actually hurt the poor in India by not really supporting the 1991 reforms and now favouring the food security bill which would lead to inflation.

The war of words between the Congress and the BJP over Sen also intensified, with ruling party leader Shakeel Ahmad saying Mitra’s statement was the “height of intolerance” – the same words Modi had used to describe the shutting down of a Mumbai restaurant by Youth Congress workers over the printing of cash memos with an anti-UPA footnote.

The BJP, on its part, tried to distance itself from Mitra’s remark. “His statement is his personal view. It’s his opinion on Sen. Sen also has his opinion. We don’t want to comment on individual views,” senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said.

Indian News-Full Meals Rs.12 in Mumbai - Rs 5 in Delhi-Newsmasthi.com

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rasheed Masood on Thursday said that one can have a full meal in Delhi for Rs 5. This comes after another Congress leader, Raj Babbar said a hearty meal in Mumbai can be bought for Rs 12. Both remarks drew sharp reaction from the Opposition, which dubbed it "laughable".

Babbar said this at an AICC briefing in response to a volley of questions as he tried to explain that poverty has come down even as prices have risen.

He was also asked about lower cutoff of expenditure limit to determine poverty and that how can the poor have their full meal two times with a daily expenditure as low as Rs 28 or Rs 32 per day.

"People should have full meals two times a day. How one can have it is a very good question that you have asked. Even today in Mumbai city, I can have a full meal at Rs 12. No no not bada paav. So much of rice, daal saambhar and with that some vegetables are also mixed," he told reporters.

Planning Commission figures of poverty reduction in India triggered a furore with the BJP and the CPI-M accusing the government of ignoring reality and Congress ally NCP also expressing its reservations.

To a question about rising prices of vegetables mainly tomato, Babbar said, "if we assess poverty by tomato, then it will be difficult. You may not be having tomato in cities but the poor people in villages will pluck a tomato and have it. Tell me whether he is rich or poor."

"We are not shying away from the issue of price rise. Prices have risen but along with that the per capita expenditure has also risen... More than the ratio of price rise, our expenditure has risen," he said.

Indian News-Narendra Modi Fire on UPA Government-Newsmasthi.com

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday fired a fresh salvo at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying his speech in Parliament seemed like an attempt to hide Centre's failures.

Modi blasted the Prime Minister's speech, accusing him of hiding behind poetry as he had no road map for development.

Modi went on to say, that while PM used poetry on Thursday in Lok Sabha his speech on Friday in Rajya Sabha suggested that he had lost his "attacking posture in just twenty-four hours".

"I listened to the speech of Prime Minister day before yesterday and I remembered the saying 'empty vessels make the most noise'," Modi said addressing a function, where Congress leader Vitthal Radadia and his son joined the BJP.

Radadia had hit the headlines last year after he was caught on camera brandishing a gun at a toll-booth and was then condemned by the BJP.

"People would have expected that Prime Minister will speak about how he wants to take this country forward, what is the roadmap, what are the programmes, but nothing of this sort was there in the speech," Modi said.

"Instead he recited 'sher-o-shayri', to cover up failures. He felt he is under attack and if he did not speak up, media attention will not be gained. That is the reason he attacked through poetry," Modi said, adding that now the entire media had started speaking the poetical language.

"But he was not aware that BJP leader Sushma Swaraj will give such a beautiful reply to him by using the language of poetry," Modi said.

"The PM spoke in the Rajya Sabha today (on Friday). His attacking posture had changed and no poetry was recited, knowing that he would get a befitting reply. His attacking posture has died within just twenty-four hours," Modi said.

AP Political News-Seemandhra Leaders Ready To Sacrifice Anything for Samaikyandhra-Newsmasthi.com

Close on the heels of Seemandhra Congress leaders organising a conference to keep the state united, the Seemandhra TDP leaders organised a round-table conference in Guntur.

Yerram Naidu, a senior Telugu Desam leader from the Seemandhra region, on Wednesday demanded that the United Progressive Government (UPA) make a statement in Parliament about keeping the state united.

Addressing the round-table conference at Siddhartha Gardens, Yerram Naidu said that the round-table conference has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the division of the state.

Reiterating that the development of the state is possible only by keeping the state integrated, Yerram Naidu opined that the Centre must adopt the 6th recommendation of the Justice B N Srikrishna Committee report and keep the state united.

Describing the demand for a division of the state as a conspiracy of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and the Congress, Yerram Naidu said the TDP has already made its stand clear, and that there was no need to make any resolution on it.

He said Seemandhra leaders are "ready to sacrifice anything for the cause of a united Andhra Pradesh".

Yerram Naidu called upon all Seemandhra leaders to be united and launch an agitation for keeping the state integrated.

The round-table conference was aimed to chalk out the TDP's future course of action ovet the Telangana issue. Leaders from 14 districts attended the conference, including TDP Floor Leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Payyavula Kesav and Yanamala Ramakrishnudu. (INN)

Mobile News-Hackers uses SMS for mobile hacking!-Newsmasthi.com

SIMs are the small, removable plastic cards maintain a person's mobile identity, such as their phone number and which network to which they subscribe. At least 500 million of them, or about one-eighth of worldwide mobile phone users, are also hackable, said Karsten Nohl, founder of the Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

If a hacker gains access to the card, he could track the phone owner's geographic location or send unauthorized text messages. The hacker possibly could also access credit card and bank account information used for mobile wallet applications.

As mobile phones have become more like computers, hackers have found numerous security vulnerabilities. But Mr Nohl’s findings appear to be the first instance of someone hacking a SIM card. It's only the latest illustration of the risks consumers face as they put more of their personal information online.
Digital Pass $1 for first 28 Days

There is no evidence that someone has yet exploited SIMs for malicious purposes, Nohl said. "We’re at least a little bit ahead of the criminal hacking world," he said. "There’s a big chance of at least the big carriers removing this risk before anyone gets hurt."

Nohl plans to present his findings at Black Hat, a large hacker conference in Las Vegas next week. He has already shared his findings with GSMA, a world mobile operator trade group. In a written statement, the organization said many of the SIM cards that Nohl found to be vulnerable have already been phased out.

"The GSMA takes the security of SIM Cards very seriously," it said. "We continue to work with our mobile operator members and the SIM providers to minimize any potential risks."

Mobile phone carriers often verify customers' identities by sending coded SMS messages to their devices. To access a SIM card, Nohl would send a message to the number disguised as the mobile phone company.

Although the phone's encryption software recognized Mr Nohl as an imposter, some would send back an error message that included some of the phone’s encryption signature. He could then use a computer program to hack the rest of the SIM card.

Nohl's study focused on 1,000 SIM cards mostly from European phone carriers. He declined to say which phone companies or countries were most vulnerable to the risk, other than that some countries were neighbors of Germany and part of the "G-7".

There is also an extra risk for some African countries, he said, where mobile banking is more common.

Business News-Hyundai to Introduce Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars-Newsmasthi.com

The Korean marque has recently revealed that hydrogen-powered cars will be on UK roads as early as 2015.

The vehicles, which are converted ix35 models, will run on hydrogen and battery power, achieving a range of 369 miles on a single tank while doing away with the lengthy charging periods of battery-only vehicles.

Emission-free hydrogen powered motoring will be trialled in London where the innovative ix35s will be integral to testing the London Hydrogen Network Expansion (LHNE).Hyundai Motor, as a supplier to the LHNE project, will join the existing consortium of companies with expertise in hydrogen transport infrastructure and operation, working to establish the UK's first hydrogen transport network covering London and south east England.

The vehicles will be leased to key public and private fleet users in the capital at first but following the test run, hydrogen fuel cell Hyundai's will be mass-produced for the general public.

The major benefits of this technology include the reduction of 'range anxiety', the re-fuelling time, which takes around three minutes and the zero emissions emitted.

Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK, said: "Hydrogen delivers considerable environmental benefits and we are looking forward to working closely with the other partners to drive forward its widespread introduction."

Mumbai Hit & Run Case: Court To Frame Charges Against Salman Khan-Newwsmasthi.com

Mumbai: It is a big day for actor Salman Khan as a Mumbai court will frame charges against him in the 2002 hit-and-run case. After rejecting the actor's plea last month, the court will on Wednesday decide whether the actor should be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
If proven guilty, Salman could go to jail for 10 years. The court will also decide on the application filed by two activists on restraining media coverage.
In June, the session court had ruled that the actor should be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the case - a charge under IPC which attracts 10 years of imprisonment.
The June 24 order was a major setback to the actor, who was earlier tried by Bandra metropolitan magistrate court for a lesser charge of rash and negligent act causing death, under section 304 A of IPC, which attracts two years of imprisonment.
One person was killed and four others were injured when the Land Cruiser, allegedly driven by Salman Khan, crushed a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra in the early hours on September 28, 2002.

Indian Political News-Narendra Modi Visa Talk Hots Up 65 MPs Write To Obama-Newsmasthi.com

The United States is coming under increasing pressure from within and outside the country to reverse its decision on denying a visa to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. BJP president Rajnath Singh, who is currently in the US, has said he plans to raise the issue with lawmakers during
But Modi has his detractors. Letters written in November and December 2012 by 65 Indian MPs asking US President Barack Obama to continue to deny Modi a visa were re-sent last Sunday.

And the head of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USIRF), Katrina Lantos, recently said: “There is significant evidence linking him to the violence (2002 Gujarat riots)…and for this reason, a visa would not be appropriate.”

Subsequently, 25 House representatives wrote a letter to the then secretary of state Hillary Clinton demanding the US should continue to deny Modi a visa.

Republicans are broadly in favour of giving Modi a visa while Democrats are not.

As per a US official statement at the time, the Gujarat CM was denied a diplomatic visa in 2005 under 214 (b) of Immigration and Nationality Act as he was not coming for a “purpose that qualify for a diplomatic visa”.

His existing tourist and business visa were revoked under Section 212 (a)(2)(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which disqualifies foreign officials “responsible for or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom”.

The US was not alone in punishing Modi for what was seen as his failure to stop the 2002 riots that claimed the lives of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus.
The United Kingdom and other European Union countries joined the boycott, but relations softened relatively fast with London making peace with Modi in October 2012.

Many thought the US would follow. But it hasn’t yet.

At least not officially.

Indian News-Bangalore Joins The Global Drumjam Circle-Newsmasthi.com

Bangalore's new urban space, Rangoli, on the Mahatma Gandhi Road boulevard just got a new rhythm, thanks to Drumjam, a joint initiative of the international percussion movement and the Bangalore Metro Rail Transport Corporation.

The idea is to allow people to let themselves down, surrender to the sound of drums and in the process, bond with fellow city folks. Singer Vasundhara Das, one of the artistes behind the concept, told NDTV, "A Drumjam is a group of people sitting down and jamming on drums and percussion instruments. This is a worldwide movement."

At the jam, professional musicians play with regular Bangaloreans who just can't resist the beat. Even those who have never touched a drum join in. A visitor said, "I thoroughly enjoyed because there is room for participation and there is no inhibition. There should be more of such programmes across the city."

A little girl drumming away with joy said, "I like it because you can play together and you have to play to the beat. It makes a bang!"

"We are here to bond with each other because we are so caught up in our digital worlds that these days we don't have time for real relationships and real conversation," said Ms Das.

Rangoli is a public space set up by the Bangalore Metro to give back to Bangalore what they had taken away: the old boulevard along the Mahatma Gandhi road.

Vasanth Rao of the Bangalore Metro said, "Bangalore is a musical city. Given the opportunity, people would like to join together and have fun here."

Bangaloreans who wish to unleash the drummer in them now know where to go.

AP Political News-First Phase of Panchayat Polls Begins-Newsmasthi.com

Hyderabad: Polling in the first phase of village-level local bodies in Andhra Pradesh began on Tuesday morning amid clashes between workers of rival political parties.

Four people were injured in a clash between supporters of the ruling Congress party and the YSR Congress party in Kothapalli village of Nandyal mandal in Kurnool district.

The activists of the two parties also clashed at a few places in Kadapa district.

Men and women queued up since 7 a.m. to cast their votes in 5,903 gram panchayats in 22 districts.

According to State Election Commission, over 18,000 candidates are in the fray for sarpanch posts and 115,703 candidates for 49,729 ward members.

The polling will continue till 1 p.m. and the counting of votes will be taken up at 2 p.m. Results for both sarpanch posts and ward members may be announced Tuesday evening.

The elections were originally scheduled for 6,140 gram panchayats in the first phase but due to heavy rains and floods, polling in 237 panchayats in six districts were postponed. Polls in these panchayats will be held July 31, in the third phase.

As many as 2,642 sarpanches have been declared unanimously elected. Congress, Telugu Desam Party and YSR Congress have all claimed that majority of these elected sarpanches belong to their party.

Andhra Pradesh has 21,592 gram panchayats, of which 21,491 are going to polls in three phases – July 23, 27 and 31.

The elections to the local bodies are being held after a gap of two years. The polls could not be held due to problems in providing reservations to various sections.

The Supreme Court in February had asked the government to conduct elections to urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions on the basis of the existing 60.5 percent quota to backward classes, Dalits and tribals.

The central government had stopped the release of statutory grants to the tune of Rs.2,600 crore to Panchayati Raj Institutions due to non-conduct of elections.

Indian Political News-Mulayam To Get CBI Clean Chit to Support Food Security Bill!-Newsmasthi.com

The Samajwadi Party which has opposed the Food Security Bill, could end up backing it after all thanks to a deal with the Congress.

According to a CNN-IBN report a Samajwadi Party-Congress deal is in the offing with sources telling CNN-IBN that Mulayam Singh Yadav is likely to support the Food Security Bill in Parliament’s Monsoon Session.

The support comes at a time when the CBI is all set to give the SP leader, his son Prateek and Akhilesh Yadav, and daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav, a clean chit in the disproportionate assets corruption case.

In November 2005, a PIL was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into the assets of Mulayam Singh, his sons Akhilesh and Prateek, and daughter-in-law Dimple. It was alleged the family had acquired properties worth over Rs 100 crore in UP, disproportionate to known sources of their income.

PTI had reported that the CBI would file a closure report on the case but the agency had later clarified that final decision was taken in the case against Mulayam Singh and his family.

“The matter is currently under probe as per the directions of the Honourable Court. Inquiry is underway and in its final stages. No final decision has been taken yet. As and when the probe is over, CBI will apprise the court,” CBI said.

However, the report on CNN-IBN also points out that even if the CBI closes the case against Mulayam, that SP leader still has a review petition against an Election Commission order also pending in the Supreme Court.
The Samajwadi party had previously opposed the food security bill stating that it was against the interests of farmers.

This is not the first time that the Congress has reached out to Mulayam by going soft on him. In 2008, when the Left withdrew from the government over the Indo-US nuclear deal, it was Mulayam who saved the day for UPA by helping them win the no-confidence motion.
